Abstract
This study examined the relevance of vocational guidance and counselling programme for secondary school students’ economic security and employability in COVID-19 era in Delta State. Two research questions guided this study. The descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. The population for the study comprised 471 counsellors from 471 secondary schools in Delta State. Sample size for the study consisted of 330 counsellors (70%) selected using the stratified random sampling technique. A 19-item questionnaire developed by the researcher and titled “Relevance of Vocational Guidance and Counselling Programme for Economic Security and Employability Questionnaire (RVGCPESEQ)” served as instrument for data collection. The response options on the questionnaire was structured on a 4-point Likert-type scale of Strongly Agree (SA) – 4, Agree (A) – 3, Disagree (D) – 2 and Strongly Disagree (SD) – 1 in order to answer all the three research questions. Face validity of the research instrument was determined by three experts in the Department of Educational Psychology, Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba, Delta State. Reliability of the research instrument was established through a pilot test sampling 17 counsellors from 17 secondary schools in Delta State which were not part of the study. After the pilot test, scores obtained were measured using Cronbach Alpha statistics which yielded coefficient reliability scores of 0.83 and 0.88 respectively; and were added up to get an over internal consistency reliability score of 0.86, showcasing that the instrument was reliable. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation statistics. Findings of the study indicated that vocational guidance and counselling programme was relevant for both secondary school students’ economic security and employability in COVID-19 era in Delta State. From the findings of this study, it was recommended among others that the government in conjunction with the Post Primary Education Board (PPEB) responsible for coordinating the activities and controlling the affairs of the secondary schools in Delta State should show their incessant support to the vocational guidance and counselling programme through adequate funding of the programme in schools coupled with the mobilization of adequate vocational guidance educational resources which makes the programme relevant for secondary school students’ economic security in COVID-19 era in the State.
