Abstract

Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19 era, funding of the educational sector has been a mirage as stakeholders continue to lament on the state of public schools orchestrated by poor funding. The issue of educational underfunding became more intense during the COVID-19 pandemic as the era exposed the lapses in Nigerian educational system. This paper however, examined Nigerian education in relation to funding school demands in Covid-19 era. The main thrust of the paper was to ascertain the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the funding demands of schools. The paper also delved into school funding experiences in Nigeria. Prudential theory was found suitable for explaining the paper as it buttressed the need for school management to inject innovative means of generating funds internally to foster the day to day activities of the school. The results among others observed that the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has adverse effects on the funding of educational sector in Nigeria. These effects were felt especially when the need to reopen schools became mandatory with compliance to the COVID-19 protocols such as fumigation of school environment, ensuring adequate water supply, providing enough classroom block to adhere to the social distancing measure amongst others. It was based on these observations that the paper recommended among others that Government, agencies and schools management should inwardly look for alternatives or innovative sources to fund the education sector in order to complement the national budget allocated to Education to meet its rising needs. For instance, schools can invest more into school farms, sells the farm produce and use it for further developments of schools. This will lessen the financial burden on the government and reduce schools’ overdependence on government’s allocation for education.
